Fast-track Your Future in Health Informatics

The Bachelor’s to Accelerated Master’s in Health Informatics (BAM) pathway allows academically strong undergraduates from any major to begin graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree. By earning approved graduate credits early, students can complete both degrees in less time and at a lower overall cost than pursuing each degree separately.

This accelerated pathway is ideal for students interested in health care, data, technology, analytics, and systems improvement who want to enter the workforce with advanced, in-demand skills.

Why Choose This Accelerated Path?

Save Time

Earn graduate credits early and complete your degree faster.

Save Money

Shared credits lower tuition and waive the application fee.

Career-Ready Skills

Develop in-demand health informatics skills.

Designed for Students From Any Major

The BAM pathway offers flexible options based on your undergraduate background.

For Undergraduate Health Informatics Students

Health Informatics undergraduates in the BAM pathway take approved graduate-level courses that also satisfy corresponding undergraduate degree requirements, reducing duplication and time to completion.

Students should enroll in the following graduate courses, which fulfill undergraduate requirements as indicated:

  • HI 670 – Introduction to Health Informatics (satisfies HI 360)
  • HI 671 – Health Care Databases (satisfies HI 361)
  • HI 672 – Health Data Vocabulary and Standards (satisfies HI 459)
  • HI 677 – Health Care Security Policy (satisfies HI 462)
  • HI 613 – Project Management in Health IT (satisfies HI 460)

Other courses may be individually recommended. A minimum grade of B+ is required for graduate coursework to apply toward both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. Students should take HI 318, which allows for waiver of HI 618 on the MS level.

For Students in Any Other Undergraduate Degree

Students from CS/IT or other undergraduate majors are strongly encouraged to apply. They may pursue the BAM pathway with program approval. Approved graduate-level Health Informatics courses provide foundational preparation for higher-level master’s coursework in the MS in Health Informatics. For students not enrolled in the BS in Health Informatics program, these courses may not substitute for undergraduate degree requirements. Academic background and course eligibility are reviewed individually. Undergraduate degree requirements must be reviewed by undergraduate advisors in the student's major. Typically, graduate-level courses count as electives in undergraduate majors.

Foundational graduate courses may include:

  • HI 670 – Introduction to Health Informatics
  • HI 671 – Health Care Databases
  • HI 672 – Health Data Vocabulary and Standards
  • HI 677 – Health Care Security Policy
  • HI 613 – Project Management in Health Information Technology

Other courses may be individually recommended depending on the student’s current major and experience.

Program Structure

The Accelerated BS to MS in Health Informatics is structured to help you complete both degrees efficiently while meeting all academic requirements.

  • Undergraduate Degree (120 credits minimum):
Complete all general education and major requirements, including Mason Core, Health Informatics, and elective coursework.

  • Graduate Degree (27–39 credits):
Certain graduate courses are integrated into the undergraduate plan or waived based on performance in equivalent coursework.

  • Total Minimum Credits: 141
Instead of completing 159 total credits for both degrees, students can complete both programs with as few as 141 credits through course waivers and substitutions.
