Associate Professor Hong Xue in the College of Public Health’s Department of Health Administration and Policy has officially assumed the role of Chair of the Tobacco Free Alliance of Virginia (TFAV) as of Fall 2024. Xue, who was named chair-elect in Fall 2023, has begun his one-year term with a mission to lead the coalition's initiatives in reducing tobacco use across Virginia.

“As the Chair, I play a pivotal role in guiding the Alliance’s efforts to influence public health policy, monitor tobacco-related legislation, and advocate for stronger regulations that reduce tobacco consumption and protect public health. It is my responsibility to oversee efforts by organizations united in their shared commitment to tobacco prevention, cessation efforts, and the creation of healthier, smoke-free environments throughout Virginia,” Xue said.

The mission of the Tobacco Free Alliance of Virginia is to change policies, systems, and environments. The coalition envisions a Commonwealth where all residents live tobacco-free, healthy lives. The TFAVV is a broad-based partnership that includes key organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Medical Society of Virginia, Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, and other private, nonprofit, and public entities.

Xue has extensive interdisciplinary experience in tobacco research including smoking behaviors, e-cigarettes, and cessation promotion. His expertise and leadership will be instrumental as TFAV continues its mission against tobacco use in Virginia, promoting healthier communities and reducing the burden of tobacco-related diseases.
